What is a Slewing Ring?

TGB Group is a leading slewing bearing manufacturer and we specialize in producing high-quality slewing rings designed for precision and durability.

A slewing ring is a type of bearing that allows rotational movement while supporting heavy loads, such as axial, radial, and tilting moment forces. It typically consists of two rings—an inner and outer ring—separated by rolling elements like balls or rollers. These components allow smooth rotation, and some slewing rings feature a gear mechanism for torque transmission.

Slewing rings are essential for a wide range of industrial machinery, including cranes, excavators, wind turbines, and robotics, where they enable efficient rotation under demanding load conditions. They often feature internal or external gearing and come equipped with grease fittings for maintenance, ensuring long-lasting performance.

Our slewing bearings are manufactured to meet the highest industry standards, ensuring long-lasting performance even in the most demanding environments.

External Gear Slewing Bearing

In an external gear slewing bearing the teeth are located on the outer edge of the ring gear. It is commonly used in cranes and construction machinery due to its high power transmission capacity.

Internal Gear Slewing Bearing

An internal gear slewing bearing has the teeth located on the inside of the ring. This design protects the teeth from the outside environment, making it ideal for applications requiring protection against dust or dirt.

Without Gear Slewing Bearing

A slewing ring without gear has no teeth and is used in applications where rotary motion does not require power transmission through gears. They are used in systems where precise rotation is required, but without gear side loading.

Lightweight Slewing Bearing

These slewing rings are designed for applications where weight is critical. Their optimized geometry reduces the amount of material used in construction without compromising load capacity or precision. Ideal for mobile machinery and packaging machines.

Casting Slewing Bearing

Manufactured from cast iron, these cast iron slewing rings support heavy loads and provide smooth, vibration-free rotation, making them ideal for applications like agricultural equipment and trailers.

Single-row Ball Slewing Bearing

In a single row ball slewing bearing each ball has four-point contact with the tracks, ideal for moderate loads and precision movement.

Double-row Ball Slewing Bearing

In a double row ball slewing bearing we have eight-point contactos with the tracks, increasing stability and load capacity, suitable for heavy machinery.

Roller Slewing Bearing

A roller bearing slewing ring uuses cylindrical rollers instead of balls, which allows it to support larger loads, ideal for applications with high axial loads.

Technical specifications of Slewing Rings

TGB Group slewing rings are designed to deliver optimal performance across a wide range of industrial applications. Proper installation and maintenance are essential to ensure durability, reliability, and maximum operational efficiency. Below are the main technical aspects to consider:

Proper Lubrication

For smooth and long-lasting operation, it is essential to maintain adequate lubrication of the slewing ring. This includes both the raceway and the gear teeth (if the ring is geared). Regular lubrication not only reduces wear but also minimizes the risk of failures during operation.

Bolting and Tightening Torque

The use of appropriate fasteners is essential to ensure the stability and performance of the slewing ring. In addition, all bolts must be tightened according to the tightening torque values specified by the manufacturer, ensuring secure fastening and preventing structural deformation.

Slewing Ring Seating

The seating of the slewing ring, meaning the base on which it is installed, must strictly comply with the specifications provided in the TGB installation manual. An uneven or improperly prepared surface may cause premature wear and compromise operational accuracy and safety.

Customized Finishes

TGB Group offers the possibility of supplying slewing rings painted in the customer’s desired RAL color, allowing adaptation to specific aesthetic or regulatory requirements. In addition, special surface treatments, such as anti-corrosion coatings, can be applied for use in extreme environments. These finishes provide additional protection against oxidation and ensure reliable performance even under adverse conditions.

Installation and Maintenance Manual

To ensure optimal installation and maintenance, TGB Group provides customers with a detailed installation and maintenance manual. This document includes all necessary technical specifications, practical recommendations, and best practices to extend the service life of the slewing ring.

Installation and maintenance of Slewing Rings

Proper installation of slewing rings is a determining factor in ensuring long-term performance, safety, and durability. It is essential that the supporting surfaces are perfectly flat, clean, and machined according to the recommended tolerances, ensuring uniform contact that prevents localized stresses during operation. Precise alignment of the assembly and controlled tightening of the fasteners—following a cross-tightening pattern and appropriate torque values—contribute to even load distribution and stable system operation.

Regarding maintenance, slewing rings require periodic supervision aimed at preserving their working conditions. Regular lubrication, using greases suitable for the environment and the application, is essential to reduce wear and protect the raceways from contamination. Likewise, visual inspection of seals, bolts, and fastening elements helps to detect early deviations, clearances, or signs of fatigue.

A preventive maintenance strategy, adapted to the duty cycle and environmental conditions of the application, helps extend the service life of the slewing ring and minimize unplanned downtime. This approach is especially relevant in demanding industrial applications, where the reliability of the slewing system is critical to the operational continuity of the equipment.
